“I now declare this bridge open”

As my website designer keeps reminding me, this site’s been “open” for more than a month now. But I’ve kept quiet about it because, what with starting a new job and moving from a converted barn into a cottage, I haven’t had time to write this entry. Nor do I have time now. I should be unpacking boxes with one hand and, with the other, adding more content to a Network Design Document.

But sod that. Thanks to my designer, here is a rather lovely website, complete with bridges. The bridges are deeply symbolic, by the way. In fact they’re carrying such a weight of symbolism that it’s a good thing they’re such sturdy structures. Yes, they’re about me being a Californian who loves Britain, but they’re also about the things that writing does, and that the Internet does: transporting things, connecting things.

Like Jeanette Winterson, “I believe in communication; books communicate ideas and make bridges between people.” Communication, ideas, connections, bridges: these are my passions. They’re why I write books, why I’ve started tweeting, and why I’ve put up this website so I can blog. Now it’s time to get on with it.

So, channeling John Lennon in A Hard Day’s Night: I pick up a pair of scissors, cut the tape, and declare this website open.
